I am so excited to share another episode of the Biotech Career Coach Podcast with Carina Clingman, PhD! While the content is primarily geared towards preparing for and executing successful interviews, the principles are generally applicable to anyone presenting to, and collaborating with, colleagues with diverse personality types in their day job.
There’s a great summary of the contents from Carina’s LinkedIn post: “We’re breaking down how to build rapport with every type of person you’ll meet on a panel interview day. Because talking to a VP requires a completely different approach than talking to a peer scientist who thinks they already do what you do.
Here’s what we cover:
- Senior leaders don’t care about your technical details. They want to know how you’ll help them de-risk something.
- The number one reason I reject candidates after a screen? They just wanted any job. Not this job.
- Your peer interviewers are the scariest people on the panel, and most candidates let their guard down around them.
- When someone pushes back on your work, try “I thought that too, but here’s what convinced me.” It validates them and lets you make your case.
- Interviews are dates. If you do all the talking and ask zero questions, there’s no second date.”
